The Good Kids
My Roles: | Animator | Sound Designer
The Good Kids is a branding studio in Bismark, North Dakota. As their personality as a studio developed, they decided to rebrand. An animated logo was a must-have to showcase their personality.
The Good Kids consider their personality to be fun, with a hint of mischief. Throughout their branding, they utilize a slingshot. It was quickly decided that the story we wanted to tell was a slingshot firing into The Good Kids logo. We explored different perspectives, from “Point of View “ to firing across the screen. After sharing some rough animatics, POV was a clear choice.
Animating the logo was a straightforward process.
The first thing I animated was the ball being pulled back and released. As the ball flies through Z-Space, it’s affected by Turbulent Displacement to give it the cartoon shape shifted effect. Next, the slingshot, which was illustrated by The Good Kids, was placed in the scene. Simple scale effects were added to give the appearance of the slingshot being pulled back. Finally, straps were created with Rubber Hose from Battle Axe. With some secondary speed lines and dust explosions added, the piece was feeling pretty good.
Making it pop with sound design
The animation needed some polish. After sharing music ideas with The Good Kids, we selected a track, I placed some sound effects and dialed in the final audio mix using several compressors and EQs. The final result came out fantastic.
The rebrand was submitted to the North Dakota AAF. The Good Kids won Best of Show!
By animating their logo, I played a very small role in The Good Kids rebrand. I am excited to see The Good Kids winning awards with their hard work and great ideas. They were kind enough to allow me to order a copy of the trophy, which is proudly on display in my office. Though my role in their rebrand was small, I’m excited about their success and can’t wait to collaborate on many more projects to come!
