Ep. 12 Kristi Wire (Wire Design Company)

In this episode of FrameOne, I sit down with Kristi Wire, founder of Wire Design Company, a creative strategy studio focused on branding, websites, and design. Kristi spent about a decade in the agency world before leaving to start her own business — a decision she traces directly to a close friend's stage-four brain cancer diagnosis, and the perspective it gave her on taking the leap while she still could.

Kristi describes how she deliberately structured her business as a "studio of one" rather than a freelance operation — outsourcing specialized work like web development to trusted, established business owners rather than freelancers, and giving them direct access to clients to build real trust. She shares the story of a handcrafted mailer she sent to about 100 contacts before leaving her agency job, which led to steady inbound interest for years afterward, and the anxious three-month stretch with zero clients that preceded a sudden flood of 18 new leads almost overnight.

The conversation also covers what it took her four years to figure out — her own brand positioning and ideal client — after consistently prioritizing client needs over her own marketing, along with practical advice on building onboarding and exit strategies, qualifying clients, and the delicate balance of occasionally collaborating with her husband, also a creative business owner, without letting business friction bleed into their marriage.

This is a candid, detail-rich conversation about building a sustainable one-person creative business — full of tactical advice for freelancers and studio owners on branding, client relationships, and knowing when to make the leap.

Hosted by Drysen, a freelance 2D/3D animator and motion designer with experience across live-action broadcast TV and commercials. FrameOne features conversations with studio owners and industry veterans navigating the career questions every working creative eventually faces.
