Ep. 13 A year in review with Drysen Carsten (Hyperfocus Motion)

In this bonus recap episode of FrameOne, I look back at the conversations from this first stretch of the show — studio owners like Cream, Twelve Midnight, Sarofsky, Spillt, and Ladybird Animation, alongside consultants and coaches like Joel Pilger and Austin Saylor — and pull out the themes that kept showing up across nearly every interview.

A few things stood out. Almost everyone described a painful, unglamorous early period before things clicked — what one guest called their "ashes years." Nearly everyone learned the hard way that contracts aren't optional, even with friends or clients they trusted. Cash flow and financial discipline came up constantly, often as the thing nobody warns new studio owners about. And relationships — not marketing, not portfolios — were consistently the actual engine behind how these businesses grew.

I also talk about what's surprised me most as the host: how differently people define success once they've actually built something, and how often the goal shifts once it's within reach. Some guests scaled aggressively and loved it. Others deliberately stayed small. A few walked away from businesses they built from scratch and had to rebuild their sense of identity afterward.

This episode is part reflection, part highlight reel — a chance to step back and connect the dots across everyone who's been generous enough to share their story on FrameOne so far.

Hosted by Drysen, a freelance 2D/3D animator and motion designer with experience across live-action broadcast TV and commercials. FrameOne features conversations with studio owners and industry veterans navigating the career questions every working creative eventually faces.
