Ep. 11 - Joel Pilger (RevThink)

In this episode of FrameOne, recorded at Camp Mograph, I sit down with Joel Pilger, founder of the former studio Impossible Pictures and now a global consultant with RevThink. Joel walks through the entire arc of his 20-year studio career, starting with landing a $30,000 project from the Charlotte Hornets using nothing but pencil sketches and confidence — a bold first move that set the tone for how he'd approach pricing for the rest of his career.

Joel is candid about what he calls his "ashes years" — seven grueling years running the studio largely solo, working himself into the ground, culminating in a breaking point at 3 a.m. after a software crash that led him to finally hire his first employee and restructure the business. He shares the practical mindset shift that helped him take on bigger risks with less fear — trying almost any major decision for 90 days before committing further — and traces the studio's growth to a peak of 25 employees and $5 million in annual revenue.

The conversation also covers the harder parts of the journey: closing Impossible Pictures after 20 years, being acquired, and the personal debt Joel was left carrying afterward — including two years spent selling studio equipment on eBay to work his way out of it. Joel explains
