Ep. 08 - Dave & Matt (Camp MoGraph)
In this episode of FrameOne, I sit down with Matt Milstead and Dave Koss, co-founders of mograph.com and Camp Mograph, at a backyard barbecue in Texas. Matt and Dave met working a rough commercial production job — reusing the same jingle across markets nationwide — before deciding, almost as a joke, that they wanted to one day present at Maxon's trade show booth. That offhand goal eventually became mograph.com, a hub for the motion design community.
They walk through the practical realities of leaving stable jobs to go independent, including the simple spreadsheet system — what they call a "burn sheet" — that tracked income and expenses closely enough to know exactly when they'd need to stop paying themselves. They also talk candidly about building relationships that turned into business: nearly every former employer eventually became a client of their production company, Nexus Motion.
The back half of the conversation dives into the birth of Camp Mograph, a four-day, community-driven event for motion designers that intentionally doesn't turn much of a profit. Matt and Dave explain how sponsor relationships subsidize ticket prices, why the event sells out within minutes each year, and the meticulous planning process — including a "walk the shoreline" run-through — that goes into pulling it off.
This is a candid look at building community-first businesses in a young, fast-changing creative industry, with practical advice for freelancers and studio owners on relationships, financial planning, and long-term thinking.
Hosted by Drysen, a freelance 2D/3D animator and motion designer with experience across live-action broadcast TV and commercials. FrameOne features conversations with studio owners and industry veterans navigating the career questions every working creative eventually faces.
